Limitations and access issues of 40' or better?

I have tried to search and really can't find the answer to wether there are limitations/issues regarding travel with a 40' coach.

Also:

My wife and I are considering a 40 diesel pusher as our first MH and I am wondering if we should consider smaller.

I am looking for a diesel because the V-10 Triton maintenance issues are a serious concern which is why 40 is the issue.
  • We always thought a 40' coach would be too big, until we owned one. we boondock with ours, we have never been told we were too big for the camp ground.
  • I would like to thank all of you who take the time to share information with new folks like me!!
  • I did not mean to suggest you were steering toward gas. I really would like diesel! I believe my wife would prefer less than 40' in the event I could . Not drive, she would be intimidated with a longer coach.

My pay grade (retired military) leaves me in a position where the older ones (fords)are all I can afford.

We have a line on a 40' diesel pusher that may be feasible however!
  • I like the v-10. My local auto and truck mechanic can perform all maintenance, MUCH cheaper than diesel. Oil, filters and fluids every 15k miles whether it needs it or not. Bill is usually about $100 or therebouts. In at least 80K miles, had to replace one coil.
  • You are correct, the EARLY V10's did have too few threads in the aluminum head to properly secure the spark plugs. Not aware of any later model issues.

No, I am NOT suggesting a gasoline coach-- I see the engine as more a matter of size and weight of a coach that meets your needs.
  • Thank you Wolfe, my concerns with the V10 are with spark plugs blowing out of cylinder heads (expensive/time consuming) repairs and scheduled maintenance.

My background is in aircraft maintenance and it's been my experience that few people take it seriously. This is a relatively well documented V10 shortcoming.
  • I would suggest there are at least three SEPARATE issues:

Concern over the maintenance of the Ford V-10. Would appreciate more insight on this concern.

Engine that would power a "close to 40' motorhome"-- yes, you have defined DIESEL.

Limitations of a 40' DP: Very few in terms of roads. And with the exception of some of the older, particularly government CG's not really an issue. If these older CGs is important, or you have really back roads that you desire to travel, let us know the "wheres you want to go" so we can give specific advice.
  • WE have the V10 at 38 foot and I think you are asking if traveling with a 40 foot would be a issue, No issue, we see and travel with 32 to 45 almost on every trip.
