Locked out of RV

We are locked out of our rv. Waiting for locksmith to come and make a key. Anyone with similar experience? What was outcome?

  • Usually someone else in the campground will have a similar key. My buddy came across a camper locked out of the RV and walked around to the drivers door, unlocked it with the key to his RV and then walked back to the passenger door where 'everyone' had gathered. Asked the RV owner "Did you check the drivers door?" I never use it - but they checked it anyway, and it opened, and the day was saved. . .

The problem with short keys is there is only 4 X 4 X 6 ways to cut the key. Most home keys have 6 pins in them, X 9 pin lengths, and the number of keys is well beyond 10,000 possible cuts. Motorhome locks only have about 4 pins in them, and 4-5 pin lengths, usually they do not cut a key with more than 3 pin lengths, so you only have about 12 pin 'set ups' and about 8 different key styles. So each neighbor's key might not fit into your door lock, but some will. Of those perhaps one in 10 people's key that will fit into your door lock will actually unlock the door, because it is the same key cut, or similar enough that it might work with a little wiggling.

What I mean by key style is the brand Weiser Lock (I used to work there in 1985) is one brand of key. Kwickset is another brand, that might not fit into the same slot. Bawldwin, Falcon, Winfield, Schlage, Yale, and a dozen other manufactures have a special key shape. They do not interchange. So you can have millions of possible key cuts, and not one will fit except yours.

    Good luck getting back in!

There is a locking gas cap that used a combination lock. You can then unlock it, and unscrew the cap inside, then it can hold a key inside. Or many places to hide a key around the RV. My lower lock can be locked from the inside latch by pushing it down as I leave. I have a copy of that lock key, while the upper lock is different, and I do not leave a copy of that key outside the RV.

    Fred.
  • Know how you feel, we were locked out last week when our Bauer NT keyless lock broke. Luckily we were at home. New lock installed and good to go. Good luck.
  • If it is the bottom lock on the Trimark brand lock, it may have to be drilled out and the entire assembly replaced. The dead bolt portion does not fail, it is the bottom lock that fails and the door cannot be opened from the inside or the outside.
