Looking to purchase first new to us motor home

First of all, Hello. I am new to the Good Sam Club and these forums. Thanks to everyone for the wealth of information contained in these forums.

My wife and I have three girls ages 14,11,11. We have had a pop up camper for a few years and are in the market to take the next step to a motor home. I have been doing a lot of searching of forums and RVs for sale online and am just touching the tip of the iceberg.

We are going to look at a 2003 Fleetwood Fiesta 31H the end of this week and was wondering if anyone could provide some input on their experiences with a Fiesta.

This Fiesta is a 2003 with the Ford V10 and Ford chassis. It has just over 52,000 miles on it. The RV dealer has put new tires on it, replaced the awning, repaired the electric step, and installed a new water heater. The asking price is currently $17,400. The photos and video appear to show it is in good shape, however, I will not place much value on that until I walk through it and test drive it this week.

I am just looking for some initial thoughts on this unit and price point in general.
  • A couple things I picked up from the video, 1. Possible water damage from the former leaky water heater. 2. Carrying capacity, he shows the document but did not say what the CCC is.

If possible, take someone with you that has owned, or does own a motorhome. By owning one, you learn stuff that you won't learn on the internet. First lesson is... how much repairs cost. How many people take a used motorhome to an independent truck mechanic for an inspection?
  • Welcome...
Evaluate the floor plan with the slides IN. Are you able to access the bathroom? the refrigerator?
Best of luck, I too will be updating to a Class A in the next 5 years upon retirement...

Thank you for the responses so far, just what I am looking for. Yes that video is the one and you are correct they mention some of the issues. Reading these forums has made been very helpful in learning the process. This motor home is the first one we are going to look at, if for no other reason than to start somewhere and have a basis to work from. Still much research to be done, but I want to at least have a starting point.

My plan is to see what is out there close to home before venturing out further. The used selection appears much greater in the south but that adds new challenges, such as getting enough time away from work to fly down, inspect, test drive, inspect again and eventually a possible drive back to Wisconsin in the RV. Could very well be worth it but I am hoping to at least have a solid basis for comparison before making that committment.

Again thanks for the input and please keep them coming.

My only advice is to look objectively at several units before buying anything.

Do not let yourself or your spouse get emotionally attached, that can often end badly

  • WELCOME TO OUR LIL PIECE OF THE WORLD...

In addition to above-I'm concerned with frame rust, anything from the north that's ten years old could be rotting away underneath already-take a good look-crawl under and make sure it's not a mess-brake lines ok? big chunks of rust coming free? Don't panic on this-I own trucks that are both ways(My E550 cube van has a frame that's almost shiny black still and it's an 03 with 228K!)-depends on use and maintenance-most motorhomes should be ok unless driven in the winter and sit a lot.

I'd get on the roof too-obvious things but look for soft spots, patches, anything out of the norm. Ask the dealer about seam maintenance and if the resealed anything.

Don't buy a frozen camper. I'd have the dealer warm it up well(good time to test the plumbing-have them rewinterize after you're done) I made the mistake-floor was spongy, but frozen solid, found out a few weeks later that I had a bigger project than expected to bring my first RV to life.

Platform is solid-should be an e450? plugs are a job but def should last 70K if not 100K without a problem-exhaust manifold bolts were a bit of an issue with these too-make sure they're all there. Check the dash A/C while you're at it-all basic stuff but easy to forget on your overwhelming test drive ;)
  • Welcome!
Ah the world of RVng......now you've got problems---hopefully life long in the good sense :B

    Low retail..$12,500
    Avg. retail...$15,000

Dealer as usual is high.......so work on that price.
    New tires/new water heater/new awning......so what, not a selling point...they were needed!

One of my concern would be having the opportunity to check out ALL the systems.....being WI.
Water to check water pump function, fire off water heater, check toilet operation....look for signs of leaks.

Definitely have AC power to check fridge on AC and other AC components.
Have propane to check fridge on propane....run furnace
Turn on stove top and oven.

As for Ford Chassis and V-10...no experience so hopefully some one with knowledge will chime in.

Don't be afraid to walk.........lots of RVs for sale.
