low operating temperatures

Hunting Unit 49, N/NE from Buena Vista. Looks like the tag also covers units 57,58, & 581. Haven't gotten squat about the area from my hunting buddy who is driving in from the Bay area of CA. Looked on Google Earth and saw BV is in a agricultural valley next to a river. Be tasty deer if they munch in the alfalfa fields.

I'm tending toward the same way you set up your rig i.e. winterizing my rig, having jugs of water inside, etc. My buddy tells me its in the teens during the day which has to mean it drops below zero at night (they rent a cabin). They also road hunt a lot which i've never cared for. My brother was working the Grand Canyon during Thanksgiving a few years ago, temps in the single digits, did exactly like you suggest, and it worked well. Very glad to hear from a hunter. I'll look at the atlas for Arvada.

Propane bottles are rated in pounds, but propane is usually sold be the gallon ... just to keep us confused, I think! :)

What area are you hunting? Last time I hunted a later season up on Grand Mesa, the nights were significantly below zero, and the days were below freezing. I winterized my rig, used bottled water and ran a generator to recharge the batteries (I was boondocking).

I'll check on gallons versus pounds. I know when I fill I pay for gallons.

Just checked the specifications & capacities for the View. The chart shows gallons then has a note on the bottom that states "actual filled propane capacity is 80% of listing due to overfill prevention device" which makes it 10.4 gallons.

Are you sure that propane capacity isn't 30 pounds, instead of 30 gallons?

Great suggestions! Sounds like the stuff we have to do in the winter here in the high desert grasslands 50 miles south of Tucson & 20 north of old Mexico. I can see that experience is a great teacher. The old adage "Good judgement comes from Experience, experience comes from bad (ignorance?) judgement" seems to apply. I keep pouring over our owners manuals to find out whether this 24 J has tank heaters and such.

I see that AZpete lives up by Gunsite north of Prescott. The moderator "1492" reminds me of a T-shirt I bought with a picture of Geronimo's band with the title "Homeland security, fighting terrorism since 1492". Guess camperpaul would know of my FIL, Bill Orr, who passed a while back.

Back to the subject though. It appears that I'll have to either be plugged in at a park or run the generator a lot. The stated LP capacity is 30 gallons, but the usage chart gives pounds per hour at different loads. My preference is to camp where I hunt since I'm not set up nor am I excited about towing my Tacoma up to CO. Thanks you guys for all the helpful hints. It probably shows that I'm new to chat rooms too.

camperpaul is on the right page. not by choice, but i have camped when temps were in the 10 to 20 below range. i put 100 watt bulbs in a safe place by the water pump, the back of the water heater, in the water fill area, and the dump valve compartment. i know that may be overkill, but i believe i did it right, because i didnt freeze up.
there is no way you can keep a coach comfortably warm at these lower temps, even with an electric heater. we did keep it about 50 degrees inside. we used an electric blanket on our bed. what a life saver. my wife was ready to string me up for bringing her to such a cold place.
i travel in my work and was in the gas/oil fields in wyoming at the time.
there were many others in the campground that used the same method of protection.

Take along a small electric ceramic heater, saves using your propane furnace. But I'm assuming that you will be in a park with electricity which probably won't be the case if you're going to be up in the woods.

Put a 60 Watt light bulb and a 'Thermo-Cube' in the refrigerator compartment to prevent freezing of the water in the cooling unit.

Campgrounds are excellent as suggested. Do not leave your water hose connected unless heated. Keep your dump valves closed until you need to dump. In very cold weather open your cabinets just a tad to let warm air get inside. A portable electric heater will really help keep the temps more stable.

Thanks for the quick replies. I've got a LP generator on board, but I'll check on a RV campground where I can plug in. I may not get a shot at a buck, but I'll have a great time using the new road home and seeing new country.
