Yesterday my LP gas leak detector went on and we had no odor in the rv. I immediately turned off the LP gas tank off and checked for foul smell around stove fridge and even at each air intake and exhaust and around the tank itself but no smell.I turned the detector off then turned it back on and waited and it came on again i turned it off and on again and it stopped buzzing.Next day i opened the LP valve and no more warning until last night again again i shut the valve off and did the same with the detector and of course no more warning. I will be checking all fittings and connections for leaks if no leaks found can someone tell me if these LP detector need replacement or some kind of maintenance if so what is the maintenance. From some of your previous posts you have a 2000 Fleetwood Southwind.That means your LP Detector is over 14 yrs. old.....they have a shelf life of 5-7 yrs. Typically an expiration date is printed on backside of detector.Get and install a new one.Low battery voltage is the other most common reason that chip.

No maintenance, but I would replace it. If you are staying in it, be sure to leave a vent open to circulate the air. I am a stickler for safety, particularly with LP and carbon monoxide. If changing out for a new detector doesn't solve the problem, you've got more investigating to do. We bought a little "wand" detector. It is useful in finding leaks. When we bought our Class B (used), it was 8 years old and we replaced all the detectors in it. Don't know if that was necessary but I considered it cheap insurance.Dale

The detectors aren't strictly for LP. They detect any flammable airborne gasses. Gas/Diesel odor etc. Heck even hair spray will set them off.

some near the floor are combination gas and Carbon Monoxide. mine goes off on co after its locked up with the air on all day, and at 3 am it will go on screaming. date is still good by 3 yrs. but its going in the trash. mine is the hardwired one.

Like others have mentioned they are sensitive to other airborne items you may use. I use Lysol in-between trips on various surfaces and if I don’t have the power in the coach off the co/propane detector will sound. Sounds to me like your just due for a new one.

Parked in an RV park in deep east Texas once during the early spring. The owners had not bothered to clean up the property since fall and there was an abundance of decaying leaves. The alarm kept going off ever three to four hours and did not quit until I move the unit off the property.

This is exactly what I was going to write. When our detector was new, I dropped the coach off in our storage garage and forgot to plug it in. Being an all electric coach with just the fridge on, the genny kicked on to recharge the batteries.

Three days later when I went to check on the coach, I found my error. The bedroom detector kept sounding even after pulling the coach out and allowing fresh air to move around.

I read somewhere after the detector has detected something, is to vacuum them out and reset. That worked like a charm. And, I never made the mistake of leaving the coach unplugged.

You also need to vacuum the dust etc. out of theses every now and then, as you do smoke detectors.
I go along with replacing it also.

My hard-wired original CO/LP detector in the built 4 years ago Class C went off at 1:30am last month. Plugged into shore power with no internal combustion engines anywhere nearby. After ventilating things by opening the door and confirming no propane smell anywhere, I woke up enough to unscrew it from the cabinet base it was mounted into, and figure out there was an in-line fuse on the 12v side. Pulled that and silence! I also saw this particular MTI unit had a "replace by July 2014" message on the front. Well, that's just great, it being the middle of August........

The new one is in, and was pretty pricey at like $80. This one says it's good up to a date 5 years out.

Old-Biscuit hit on my foray into this area.

Low voltage was my problem while boondocking. Now the annoying noise started at 2AM. After a quick check while hobbling around on my crutches I open windows and vents and returned for my much needed beauty rest.

Next morning I mixed soapy water and checked every gas line connection inside and out. A neighbor suggested the low voltage I had already started my gen by that time so no confirmation or problems for the rest of the trip. I did add a on/off switch to be used as a snooze alarm while checking for problems. Now with the addition of a DC volt meter I keep a closer check on the batteries and ended up replacing a faulty converter. No problems since, knock on wood.

Thanks guys, actually i purchased this unit 2 years ago and i'm just starting to use it and to know it. I will change the detector because the 12v battery is fully charged and i have no leak, but as a precaution i will also change the regulator and the hoses that way everything will be new.

John, my detector did the same thing especially when my dog walked by it or if our coach door was open and exhaust gas fumes would enter my coach. Finally, it would just go off randomly? I replaced it (it was 7 years old) and haven't had anymore troubles.
