Maceators

Anyone out there using one of these? Do they make dumping easier? Are they worth purchasing? Suggestions welcome.

  • I own a flojet macerator and I do not think it's easier. I preger to use the stinky slinky when possible.
However as mentioned the macerator allows one to dump up hill using a large diameter garden hose. The macerator creates more options for dumping an can be invaluable in a pinch
  • If your rig is smaller, you can always see about having a sewage clean-out installed, so you can use a macerator pump to dump your rig at home. The caveat is: Call it a sewage clean-out... not a dump station.

    Two caveats:

Macerator pumps will burn out lickety-split when run dry. I like having a clear plastic sleeve to see when to turn mine off before the pitch goes up.

Make sure you have enough amperage. I have a dedicated poop battery for my trailer instead of having to use the RV's house batteries.
  • When leaving the last state park we camped at we were unable to make the turn (LB F350 DRW & 40ft 5th)to the parks dump station so we were wishing we had a macerator as we would have been able to dump. Lucky for us a rest area between the park & home had a dump station. So we spent some time shopping and looking at videos online of different macerators and decided "Yup think we will get us one"

Then cruising craigs list Sat. morning we found a gentleman selling a brand new one for a great price. We now have a FloJet 18555 Macerator.

A neighbor camper came in one trip and setup and left his empty blue tote sitting in the back of his pickup truck.

After a couple of days I noticed he was hooking up a FLOW JET to his trailer tanks and then pumped the tank into the empty tote in the back of his truck. Then he unhooked the line from the FLOW JET and tied it off high on the truck and drove off to the dump site. There he said he just lowered the small line down into the dump and let gravity empty his tote in the back of the truck. No mess at all...

Seemed like a neat way to do this... He said the only drawback is to make sure the BLUE TOTE was bigger than the biggest dump tank. Otherwise you might over fill the BLUE TOTE and have a mess to clean up in the back of the truck...

I could see where this would be real handy pumping out your trailer when at home sitting in CAMP BACKYARD. Just pump it down the sewer tank at home.

I do exactly this. Black tank gets emptied via the poop pump. I drive to a dump station and let gravity empty from the tote tank into the dump. then go back, dump the grey. Finally, I toss some bleach in and rinse it out just to minimize odor.

-edited- As for a macerator pump, my ideal would be a permanently mounted one, but with a normal 3" drain hose fitting for a grey water bypass, or an emergency dump, if there are impeller issues. I just find the pump very useful.

  • They don't necessarily make it easier but they do give you other dumping options. They will allow you to dump up hill through a skinny hose.
