Macerator Pumps

I want to permanently install a macerator pump to empty tanks. I find it hard to find specs on the different pumps-Thetford, Johnson, Flojet, Jabsco. Please provide your choice of pumps and/or systems and any specs of pumps like motor amps if avail.
Thanks

  • One type of class "B" rig I looked at had a macerator pump permanently installed, but it had a full 3" sewage port as an emergency dump or a way to get rid of grey water.

I'd probably go that route, or at least a way to allow for a grey water bypass. For my type of camping, a macerator pump does come into good use, either to use a tote tank or to pump into an uphill clean-out.
  • I have the portable Flo-Jet. It is handy to pump to sewer at home or while driveway camping at a friends house. I ran a 12V power supply to the compartment where my dump valves are which conveniently is directly under the 12V fuse box. I have not had an issue with clogging but have had to clean it a few times. I don't know the benefit of having one permanently installed.
  • Ours is a sani-con. Monaco installed them factory on almost all their coaches.

It is paired with a Techma macerating toilet.

We've never had any problems with the system. It works great, it's clean and not smelly. I'd never go back to a gravity drain
  • I've had RVs both with and without macerator pumps. Initially I thought the macerator was a good idea, but now I'm having second thoughts. Besides things like hair getting tangled up in the mechanism, some waste tank chemicals break down the neoprene impeller in the pump. Replacing it isn't difficult, but it can be a real pain and might be messy depending on where the pump is located and the state of the tanks when the impeller gives out. My current RV has a SHURflo macerator. Most RV parts supply places charge an arm and leg for replacement units and parts. I've found most marine supply outfits offer the same units at sometimes 1/2 the price an RV parts house will charge. (BTW, SHURflow comes in both 12 and 24v with left or right discharge.)
  • I use a portable Flojet and find that it gets clogged mainly from the wife's hair from the shower. It needs to be disassembled and cleaned regularly. I wouldn't have one permanently mounted for that reason. Other brands may be better.
  • I have a Jabsco pump that I found on Ebay.

It says it draws about 16 Amps.

Look around some Marine stores and you can find the information you may need. The most expensive part for my set-up was assembling the discharge hose. I was able to use some old firehouse that I got from a friend but the "Leak Free" fittings were costly.

    Overall the pump works well.

One draw back is that the outlet is 1" therefore it drains slower than the 3" flexible Pipe that most of us are used to using.
However I can discharge up to 100' with out a problem.

    Hope this helps.
