OR you could get on 287, to 78w 81S 66E to Rt17 south to Fredricksburg, then onto I-95 for the rest of the way... avoids all the cities....
Assuming you have an RV left after the terrible conditions on I 287. Came through on that a year ago and thought I was driving off road. Just my experience.
I 81 through NYS can be a trial if the weather turns bad and it can. Just check before leaving. It is seldom bad for more than 24 hours in the Fall.
Our route from Rochester also after Christmas, was always I 390 to 15 in Corning and then 15 to I 81 in Harrisburg PA from there I 81 is good. Have never encountered severe weather in years of travel, doesn't mean it can't happen.
Now we leave when we feel like it which means real soon before it gets really cold.
Came back from PA in June and took I287 to I87. It was just as good (bad) as I80. Most of the interstates in the northeast are in tough shape, especially the overpasses. Apparently, the gummint is spending money on other things.
There are several routes to get to I81 south. I84 to Scranton, I84 to 209 to I80 or just stay on 209. The trick is to miss the major metropolitan areas in the northeast corridor.
Further Thread Drift: The worst of the worst in recent times is I 88 Binghamton to Albany - not sure this counts as an interstate as it never leaves NY - it made I 287 seem smooth. I don't think it has ever been maintained since it was built so the then leader of the NY Senate had it built so he could get from his home in Binghamton to Albany, or so it is reputed.
