mattress question

We currently have the restonic air mattress with a topper on it. It dosn't seem to be very good. Debating on a new topper for it, or replacing with a standard queen. First question is will a new standard size queen fit though the entry door? Thoughts on toppers and how long they last?

  • Any full queen should fit thru any standard sized RV door except perhaps a Teardrop. We just replaced the miserable mattress that came with our new FW and it was easy out, easy in. Retired LNCS here.
  • yes you can bend the mattress, just assess your trailer.

i'd say buy a mattress rather than messing around with toppers. in fact, get a 30 day warranty to return if you don't like it.
  • Yea thankfully those days are long gone, but thanks for the reminders of how bad it could be. Glad to see fellow Chiefs on the forum. Take it easy...
  • I'm with Dale.Traveling. We bought that type of mattress from WalMart: their Spa Sensations. It had high reviews and we have not been disappointed. We bought one for the motorhome, loved it so well, now have 2 in the house. A queen shipped to your home is right at $200. Give it 48 hours to expand. Good luck!
  • I'm sure you can find one of the blue and white striped 4" thick lumpy mattress we had on ship at the closest DRMO or surplus store Senior Chief. I bet they'll throw in the stains for free. Should fit without a problem. Show the wife how we slept in the good old days. Stow a couple girly mags, a few letters from home and press a set of liberty dress blues underneath to complete the illusion. You could even have air bedding days on every other Thursday! Think of the fun if you can find a few of the chicken feathered pillows we were issued!

Back to the real question - it's going to depend on what you get as a replacement. I replaced ours with a 6" foam core. Very comfortable and has shipped rolled up and compressed down to a 6' x 12" cylinder (short queen). Once unpacked it expanded to proper proportions. You could always try a dress rehearsal with the old mattress. If you can get the new mattress in but not the old one out you can cut to old one up into manageable pieces with a saws-all. Might make a mess but a proper field day before liberty will square everything away and keep the LPO happy.

    Cheers shipmate.
