Max HP and Torque ??

I have an 04 Fleetwood Revolution with a Cummins ISC 350hp and I believe torque is 1080lbs. My coach has a Silver Leaf that displays hp and torque. My question is, when do you get max hp and torque. I can't remember the exact numbers, but approximately the highest I've seen is around 260 hp and 800lbs of torque. Even going up very steep grades like the Grapevine or the grade leaving Las Vegas I've never seen anything close to max numbers. Just curious. Thanks

Look at the torque and HP power curves. You will see that at max torque the RPM will be around 1400. The HP will be higher at higher RPM,2200-2400, but your torque will be about what you are seeing.

BTW your HP rating is 350 and your torque rating is 1050

This is what I found when looking at this. Max torque at 1400 rpms, Max HP at max rpms (2000+). Most likely measured at the flywheel not the rear wheels.
  • If you are ever passing Centralia, WA on the 5, stop at Brazel's and they will put your coach on a dyno. and you will know for sure. Alan is a great guy and very knowledgeable. When I was pres. of my WIT chapter we were going to have a dyno shoot off but couldn't get enough interest. They also have a park with water and 50 amp with a dump station on site.
  • If I recall correctly, HP is directly read by the ECM on electronically controlled diesels and torque is calculated. Every diesel engine manufacturer know precisely how much HP is produced per pound of fuel burned for their engines. Since the ECM know how much fuel is injected into the engine it than knows how much HP is being produced.

I'm sure others can clarify/expound on this but that's what I seem to recall.

I've used the Silverleaf to monitor both and have seen 505 hp occasionally and the 1550 torque often.

  • Since I don't know where the Silverleaf system measures HP and torque I can't adequately address your question. What I can suggest is that the manufacturers generally measure HP and torque at the crankshaft. With that in mind transmission output or rear end figures would be considerably lower than manufacturer ratings.
  • I have seen 1300 degrees EGT, and never seen a full 350 horsepower. same engine as yours.
