Metal Valve extenders - TST tire monitoring sensors?

My Born Free Class C 24 ft has extended valves on the rear dual tires but they are some type of braided extension braced at the tip with a piece of solid metal with a hole in it. This brace looks like...

Thank you for your reply. I plan to install the TST tire monitoring system for peace of mind. I'm not certain if the metal extenders are 'required' or simply recommended for the sensors and thought I'd ask. The sensors thread onto the air valves and I wondered if the metal extenders are needed for stability.
