Michelin sidewall cracking . Need advice

I just came back from inspecting my 2008 Fleetwood Bounder 38P . It has been in storage for the last 2 months since returning from Florida . The sidewalls on all the Michelin XRV 22.5 tires are showing some pretty substantial cracking . I had planned on replacing the two fronts before heading out again but am now worried that I should possibly be better to replace all six . Any advice would be greatly appreciated .
  • Please tell us from the DOT code the week and year they were produced.
  • Replace them all. Moisture gets into the cracks and to the belts and cords. Might let go in mile or who knows.
  • If the tires are the original tires you are at the end of their useful life. Same thing happened to mine. I replaced mine with 9R22.6 104ZERO TOYO tires. These are commercial bus tires and have a great warranty and say that they can increase fuel mileage. Will see about that this summer.
  • It's been recommended that tires be replaced at or around the 5yr mark. Your about 6yrs or so, so it may be time. Have a look at the date code on the tires. This will tell when they were manufactured, you may need to replace all tires. Just so you know, I ran Michelins a long time ago and I had the same problem with side wall cracking. When it came time to replace them I went with other tires. It appears that most people have issues with side wall cracking on the Michelins.

  • I assume they are OEM to the rig (i.e. six years old.) I don't know what it is about Michelin and down south, but more people seem to have problems with cracking with that brand.

Can't tell you what to do, that is a very personal choice. Will tell you a friend pushed his and had a blow out which caused him vehicle damage.

I have them on a 5'ver I store down south, but only have it pulled 100 miles per year. They are six years old also and are cracking. I decided to push it one more year, but didn't like it.

Some will say the older tires are made better and can take it as long as they are not cracking up in the tread area. Others would run for the hills.

Hopefully you will get lucky and some help with the cost from Michelin but they ALL need to be replaced if you have sidewall cracking
