Using the IR gun is well and good, but please do not believe it is telling you the real story on tire temperature. The IR gun is only reading the relatively cool surface. The area of measurement is too large to give accurate reading of the hot spots and rubber failure initiation is not based on average temperature but based on the hottest locations which are many times 0.05" is diameter and maybe 1/2" inside the structure.

Rubber is a good insulator so it does not reflect the real temperature of a tire.
