Mini Class C's : Any being built?

I know you had some Toyota models in the late 80's and going by the Specifications would have been slower than a snail up hill.
We do have 4x4 versions that are easy to park and traverse rough terrain. No these are not TC's

  • Smallest currently are Tiger models built on one-ton Ford, Chevy or Dodge chassis. In the late 20th century Frank Industries built Xplorer models on 3/4 ton and one-ton Ford and/or Dodge, and Serro Scotty built on the "compact" Dakota chassis from Dodge, which was a bit larger than Ford and Chevy compact trucks.

    FourWinds built some compact C's for CruiseAmerica on Ford's F-series, but that was probably a SuperDuty, might even have been dual rear wheel.

    Small is hard to sell here.

    Saw variations of these beasts at Coober Pedy and elsewhere. The Explorer is very similar to the Tiger, except that I don't think that the Explorer can run the A/C or microwave without shore power.

    Do you know if these beasts are set up for below freezing operations? (I was just brushing the snow off of my solar panels.)

  • The XPCamper is pretty cool, but it isn't cheap.

    It looks like the floor of the camper is still raised pretty far off the frame of the truck. I'd love to see something that sat on the chassis frame to reduce height, weight and cost. I know it would need wheel wells. I'd also like to see something barebones so you could put it on a smaller pickup and not be overweight.
  • Nothing as far as a complete package. To be honest, its just not feasible because Toyota and Ford won't give us the heavy-midsize pickups that the rest of the world gets.

    About as close as we get is XP camper, which builds cargo fiber camper shells, and then upfits them onto your provided chassis:

  • That sunliner looks great. I wish one of the TC companies would make something like that for a pickup without the bed.
  • No, there is nothing like that here in North America. Wish there was. I'm not sure we would consider one, but it would be nice to have available. I guess the closest thing would be a 4x4 Sprinter van something.

    It's funny, just about when manufacturers start to do a little something towards better gas mileage, the price of gas takes a big drop. Right now it's way down, under 2 bucks a gallon in most states. I hope that doesn't deter the progress towards better MPG.

    I drove one of those snails for 15 years, maybe 80K miles. It was built on a 1983 Toyota 4x4 chassis. It would go up anything, but not fast enough to suit the folks roaring up hills behind me. Scary. And yes, a C, not a TC.

    My Tiger CX is the closest substitute I could find. some TC makers are now building flatbed models. There is also the XP camper. But those are not C's.

    That Sunliner looks great! Any chance of a US version?
