Monaco purchase advise please

Looking for first motor home, looked at many so far. wanting older good quality unit instead of newer one. We found a 1999 Monaco Diplomat 38 ft. with 1 slide, diesel with 95000 miles on it. floor plan fits our wants and needs. Unit looks good, price is around 30000 which I feel is pretty good. it has the 275 horse motor. can some of you help us with specifics on this unit for how well it should run, hold up etc. Is this motor a good one, smaller than others I have looked at. I have not seen maintenance records yet but inquiring about these. Southern area near us so not in north with salt on roads. Thanks guys, you are always helpful.

Bruce, thanks for suggestion. I tried to pm him but I am not on his buddy list, I am new here and don't know how to get the email to him. Could you help me figure this out. Searched but not coming up with info to do this. Thanks Rick

If he has restricted his email to those on his buddy list then you cannot email him

The 5.9L Cummins is a good LITTLE engine and will get around 10 mpg in that weight MH. I'm partial to Monaco products and the Dip is a decent slightly above entry level DP. Since you are five years from retirement it probably makes little difference what you buy for the first one as in five years you will probably be looking for something different... you have to start somewhere and rarely does anyone do it on the first try. I always say to buy more MH than you think you need... One time. Good luck and I'd probably wait a couple years before buying so hopefully you'll have a higher budget and prices will be lower on the same newer unit with less miles.
  • Newmar fell through, didnt get it after all. had some problems with it that came out at last moment. just glad found out early. still looking now.
  • I think price is a bit high....$25,000 more like a good selling price. if it has a propane gen I would pass, but that's my opinion. 275 hp on the low side for hp, but it will get you anywhere you want to go.....mountains it will climb slow, mines 330 hp and is a tad slow up the inclines. One slide is ok, two better. Doesn't take long to get loaded with a lot of weight aboard!
  • Tried to do a clickey but it did not work!

    Copy and paste works fine.

What happened to the 2003 Newmar Mountain Air you bought in Sept?

NO MATTER HOW GOOD THEY LOOK.
The DOT code will be the determining factor. Over 5 years old change them out. You do not know how they were cared for and if they sat baking in the sun. With 95,000 miles you might get lucky and they are less than 5 years old. CHECK THE CODE>

  • I have had the 1998 version with the 5.9 Cummins for 8 years, many upgrades but the fundamental coach is solid and of excellent quality (for an RV). Price is about right...I have the propane genny, would much rather have diesel.
