Monthly Maintenance Disaster
Hello Fellow RVers,
Its been a while since I have posted. In fact its been about 3 years. Since my son started high school the bus has been parked but that did not mean I did not do my monthly running of the engine and routine checks.
April 27 was just another one of those times. I went out ran the genny and all ran fine. I usually remove the inner cowling and make sure there were no critters in there before starting the coach. My son was in the passenger seat and me in the drivers. The coach ran fine for about 5 minutes then it backfired and that's when it all went wrong.
Fire blew out of the carburetor and burned my sons hand. I tried to put out the fire with a blanket but it got out of control real fast. Long story short the coach went up in flames and took out both our house and the one next to it.
We are sure the good Lord was watching over us that day as I only ended up with a busted leg and my son had 3 burned fingers. It could have been a lot worse.
Its scary knowing we were planning on a summer trip to run the RV and try and get back into it again. It could have been on the road with my whole family in it. In retrospect and with respect to this category in the forum I would everyone to be careful running the coach with the air cleaner open or parked near your home for that matter.
There is so much to this story that people could learn from and I apologize if it is in the wrong category. Perhaps the moderator could help me if it is.

Oh and if you are wondering, the coach had 28k original miles and I never had an issue with it.
