If it is mostly dust, blow it off with compressed air and then close the hood and don't worry about it.
I respectfully disagree, it is beneficial to keep your engine/engine room clean and free of anything flammable. Greasy, oily, engine grime can absolutely pose a safety risk. Count me as one that sprays with simple green and rinses with low pressure.
