I used to live in Naples, FL and if you want to see out of control HOA's move there.
A good Friend of mine lives in a very nice gated community. He received a letter from his HOA stating that he was leaving his garage door open too long. They went on to say that the door was only to be open when entering and exiting. One of his neighbors was timing him with a stop watch!
Another friend lived at a nice Condo, the HOA voted and changed to rule on having a Pickup Truck. This was done during the summer when most were not there so the Condo Commandos could pass what they wanted. One person living there had a Son that would visit from Ft Lauderdale, he was told that he could not park his Brand new $60,000 stock pickup there while visiting his Mom. This same HOA Commando told me that I could not park my Motorcycle there when visiting for the day. When the President of the HOA found out how I was treated he told me that I was welcome to visit any time that I wanted as the Rules only meant that anyone "Living" there could not park certain types vehicles on property. By Law they could not stop anyone from Visiting. They may be able to control how long you can visit but not what you drive.
The above is why I moved out of Naples and Collier County. I owned a nice home and could more than afford living there but these HOA's were getting out of hand. There was one that started Booting Cars for parking with a tire on the grass and then would charge several Hundred Dollars to remove it!
Where I now live all of us take good care of our Property but we do not need to get approval for painting our home.
