I can't see how it ever makes financial sense to sell off a rig that is in good working order in favor of a newer one.
That said, there's plenty of non-financial reasons. If it doesn't do what you want, or you like newer stuff, go for it.
I've also found that there is little difference in trade-in or used sale price between an "averagely" used rig and an exceptionally well cared for one. Heck, when I traded, the dealer worked his price strictly from the books, never having seen the vehicle.
