Motorhome Sales People

I am convinced that if you bought a $300,000.00 diesel pusher drove it around the block bringing it back to the same dealership and telling them you would like to sell it to them they would tell you it is worth $100K. They would reference a mystical wholesale book that shows that value. If you ask to see the book they would not let you. They would tell you that they have to spend 10K to get it ready for sale. They would have to do this that and the other thing. I am all for a company making a profit but these dealerships are too much. I know I can sell it myself but trading in is much easier.

    E) Repeat you have no friends at the dealership it is a business to them and you are the mark
  • Look at it this way. You are a motorhome dealer and can by a certain model rig wholesale for 250,000.

Why would you ever buy that model from somebody walking into your dealership for $300,000 or $350,000 or $400,000 or whatever they think it's worth?
  • IMHO that's why it makes more sense to buy used 'right'. So when you want to upgrade there is no loss factor. Been doing it for years and have not lost a cent yet. There is a sweet deal out there for every privately owned used RV, you just have to look for them.
  • Unfortunately, there's a cost to make things "much easier" for you. And yes, they really are in business to make money. Fact is that once a coach has been registered, any subsequent resale must be as a used vehicle. Obviously, your $300k to $100k example is not realistic, but once classified as used, value goes down by a significant chunk. That's when it makes more sense to try the private sale route for your rig with 0.7 miles on it (once around the block!). ;-)
  • Yep, dealers like a big spread on trade in vs market value. For example, when my Dad passed, we looked at trading in his 18 month old F-150 King Ranch with 5K miles and get my Mom a new car. The Lincoln/Ford dealership offered around $19K on the trade. We sold it ourselves for around $33K.
