So we've sold our house and moving to NC - Wilmington area. I have a few questions about licensing and vehicle registration to those of you in NC. What I know: Need to transfer my license first, then register the vehicles. I also know I will need to pay a 3% tax, then personal property tax, then fees etc. How does NC value your vehicle? 3% on a fairly new MH is going to be pretty expensive if they use NADA. I also have another interesting scenario. The folks that bought our house wanted to buy my tractor. They have a boat for sale. So we decided to trade. In order to get it to NC I can't think of any other way to get it there unless I use the previous owner's tags. Once I get there I can just get tags for the trailer and I think I need to register the boat with division of wildlife.Can anyone help clarify how this will work and more importantly , how much it will cost me? The registration is 36 for each car plus the 3%..however the 3% is capped at 150 max per vehicle...it is a road tax, not a sales tax...I call it the welcome to NC tax. The county you reside in determines the personal property tax on the cars (slightly below NADA)but for coach will be the value based on the chassis. Hope that helps.

For the boat can you just get a temporary tag for it? When I purchased my coach in florida and drove it to ct. thats what we did.

Since it's private sale and I would have to get title etc and then registering in another state. The owner will let me use his tag to get it here.

will he let you use his tags, then discard them? if so, just be borrowing the boat on the trip down.bumpy

Kirk I never compared but as I understand it insurance in NC is cheaper than anywhere in the US. I have a Mercedes and a Honda registered here paying just liability and its less than $600 a year. Everything up North is covered in one policy but I think my full coverage on the motorhome (40ft Class A Diesel pusher)is around $900 a year.

Congrats on achieving escape velocity from MD! I lived there for a short time and only begrudgingly pass thru occasionally.

NC isn't perfect, but it's danged closer to it than MD.

That sounds pretty good to me----When I moved from Glen Burnie to NC 10 years ago our 2 car trailers 2 pick up 2 cars and the motorhome would cost almost $9000 right off the bat. Then would have personal property tax and state inspection every year. Everything was diesel so no emissions in MD and of coarse no yearly State inspection as MD don't have one. We registered the cars here and since I still own my home in MD left the rest registered there. In 10 years I paid more taxes down here on one of the cars than I paid for it when purchased.....

Update - for those that have any interest - Per NC DMV - total for my 2013 MH is $675. There are various stickers, plates fees etc, the usage tax which was my main concern has a $250 limit. So while they may assess 3%, they will only charge a max of $250. So, all in - less than $700. Better than I thought.

MD to NC wow be ready for a cultural shock of a lifetime. Go there all the time DD lives in MD and sis lives in NC Asheville area which is a real moment also.

First off, welcome to our fine State. The fees are a bit of a slap in the face upon arrival. That being said, it has not deterred the steady stream of folks fleeing the North! Obviously I'm biased but I would much prefer to live here as well. I have a good friend who resides in Maryland and the cost of living is pretty outrageous compared to what we pay.

As for the tags, we bought our TT in VA and pulled it back to NC with the owner's plates then I mailed it to him. It worked out good for us. I would wait and pay one time in NC if you can. I also would recommend looking for a DMV tag office and License office outside of Wilmington if you can. The lines can get pretty ridiculous. To me it's worth a 30 minute drive out of town. I imagine that's not a phenomenon unique to NC.

and in NC, unlike MD and VA, you can buy decent portable gas tank spouts with those little yellow air vents/stoppers legally.
