Moving west

We are going to move to the Seattle area in October from upstate NY. my question is what would be the best route considering weather. We have a 36ft motor-home towing our car on its tow dolly. How much time should we allocate for the trip. Any other suggestions would be helpful. We have used this same rig on vacation up and down the east coast for the last seven years.
Thanks
Doug

  • The mountain passes can be questionable that late in the year, be prepared to wait out storms. Here winter tires (not all seasons) or chains will be mandatory, check into regulations on your side. And don't forget the umbrellas, you will need them.
  • Good luck! I hope your prepared for outrageously high prices, really really long commutes. I90 is your fastest route.

Best route is still I-90 all the way. Chicago can be tricky, but if you catch it at the right time you can get through it with minimal hassles. Your NY EZ Pass is good all the way through to the coast. Cleveland can be a bit of a challenge with Dead Man's Curve on 90 but other than that I-90 is a pretty good road. I like to call I-90 the Main Street of the North. Great scenery along the way also.

I should add, that it does depend on when you go in October. Early October should be fine going over the passes, late October not so much.

Exactly my suggestion too. If it was me I'd make it as close to the first part of October as possible.
  • October means weather could be issue.
From NY to west of Chicago I would take a highway parralleling the toll roads.
Once west of Illinios, I would get off the interstate and swing north to come across US 2. It is a slower pace, but better scenery.
Once getting to Spokane area drop onto I-90.
My route would be about ten days. We travel less then most per day at about 58-60 MPH.
  • Is it a go go go trip or will you have time to stop and see things?

  • Not sure about you, but when I drive across country I go 500 miles per day going 60-62 MPH.
