Did you use a timing light and follow the proper procedure for checking timing?
It probably involves disconnecting a single connector that forces the electronics to a fixed setting and then using the light to set the timing to whatever is on the underhood decal, most likely ten degrees and then reconnecting the connector. You cannot guess at this.
This is a Ford EEC IV system, they all work about the same but you need to set the timing properly and accurately.
