My wife dropped a bombshell on me tonight!

Hey good folks,
I'm retired but my wife wants to work for five more years for financial reasons. Tonight she said if we sell the house and her fancy car we could get a big diesel pusher and she would retire tomorrow but we would be full timers with five animals. Sounds impossible to me.

I need some advice about full timing. Downsides, upsides, and otherwise.:)

Does anybody full time with three cats and two dogs? Yikes!

~Thanks, John

  • You can do it!
Just consider a practical exit plan before you take off fulltiming.
    Good luck!
  • Stepdad, if your wife wants to go, GO! Not to sound negative, but the pets will thin out as time goes on and you will have a smaller group traveling with you. If the finances work out, don't let anything hold you back.

On that note, we don't full time ourselves but travel at least once a month. Lot's of family and business commitments keep the stick and bricks in place for us (which is OK).

    MM.

We fulltime in a 35' Super C with 2 cats and 2 dogs. The cats are brother and sister that are 13 years old. They never traveled before we went fulltime. The dogs are a 12 year old Standard longhaired Dachshund and an 11 year old 75 lb. Australian Sheepdog/ Chow mix. Been on the road for nearly 2 years and aren't planning to stop any time soon. It can be done. It's an adventure.

It was almost WWIII at my house 3 years when I told my wife I wanted to work 1 more year! IMHO the most important thing is finances! You don't want to retire and have a lot of big payments that makes your life uncomfortable! If you sell your house no more property taxes and house maintenance or house payments! I spend 7 months a year (Fall/Winter/Spring) at the Beachcomber Resort in Lake Havasu City, AZ. We pay $500.00 per month rent plus electricity. We travel with one dog (Standard Red Poodle) and a bird (Yellow Naped Amazon) with no troubles. There's one lady at the RV Resort we stay at that walks 3 small dogs. The cats shouldn't be very much problem IMHO. Wherever you decide to winter you'll have to check to see if there is a restriction on pets. Good Luck
  • Sounds like a GREAT wife to me. Willing to give up her fancy car and security of her job to spend 24/7 with you and all the adventures that you could have together. IMHO you need to take her firmly by the hand and say, lets go. Congratulations on what must be a wonderful marriage. I know what I'm talking about, I've got a wife that good.
  • I am not a full timer either but we thought seriously about it and did not go for it. Too old to think about it now but we both think maybe we should have done it. We belong to a "full timers club as we are on the road lots. We envy those in the same club. We also see people who we wonder how they do it with all their animals (we have one), but they do it. The three cats are probably never going to go outside and of course the two dogs will have to be on a lease all the time they are outside. Others do it and you can too if you want to. aaDon't rule it out f
  • I'm not a fulltimer. But, my advice to you is, if it's what you both want, do it. It will work out with the animals.
You don't know what life will hand you tomorrow.
    Enjoy your travels.
