NC road conditions

We are planning a trip from Florida to Maggie Valley NC.

My trip planner has us routed up I75 to Atlanta and then I985 NW from Atlanta towards the NC line. Then we are on US 23 and US 19. My ancient memories of US 23 and US 19 up there was narrow and twisty is that correct?

Would it be better to go up I95 to Columbia SC and over on I26/I385 to Greenville and then to Maggie Valley or is the route from Greenville to Maggie Valley about the same as the other? It looks like the route Via Atlanta is the shortest.

Thanks for the info

Dave

  • Your route planner is giving you the best route from your location. US 19/23/441 is almost all 4 lane. No problems throughout
  • I also live in north Florida and have gone to Maggie Valley most Octobers. We travel N. on I-75 to Forsythe, Ga. and take 83 East to Madison where we pick up 129/441. At Franklin we take 23/441 to 81 (Great Smokey Mountain expy)to Waynesboro: Exit 102B onto 276 and then to Maggie Valley. Go Gators!!
  • Ditto what Skylark said. Once you hit 23-74 you can go to maggy or Cherokee. From maggy over Soco gap to cherokee should be avoided unless you are in your toad. 74 between maggy and the cherokee turn off has several campgrounds but I like Stone Bridge in maggy.
  • If you come up I75, go to I575 in north Marietta, Ga,, which turns into 515. Take 515 to east Blue Ridge, Ga, turn left on highway 60 toward Mineral Bluff, Ga and Murphy, NC. In Mineral Bluff, turn right on 60 toward Murphy, NC. Use highway 60 to US 74, turn right, you will intersect US 19 & 74 going east. Keep US 74 east to US 276, go north on 276 and follow signs to Maggie Valley. US 19 from Atlanta comes across the mountains, very steep and curvy, the other way is a little longer, but very doable compared to 19. This is if you are bring a coach or trailer.

Last time I ran it I went I I95-26-I40-19 then down. It's a hassle getting there anyway you go but that way you run the least bad road. Hopefully you can go on a weekday as traffic is better. On the final leg it's better to get up and run 5 hrs and arrive rested and ready to set up.

That's exactly how I'd go. Once you get off on 19 it gets to be more rural but still good road. 19 is called the Soco Rd, best I recall. It gets really twisty between Maggie Valley and Cherokee. Not sure I'd try that leg on a coach.
