Need advice badly

My 1999 Fleetwood Discovery 34Q. Has a Onan 6500 propane generator. Having a special need child the generator must run his air machine. It stopped putting out power, so I took it the RV sales and service. They worked on it all day and told me that is either the brushes or the circuit board and they did not have the parts. They only charges for one hour labor, and suggested that I take it to Cummins.

Cummins had the Motor Home for seven days before they looked at it. At first the young service advisor said it was going to cost me an 1 1/2 hours labor, after the analysis my charge was $190., and the rotor has to be replaced and it would be about $2100 with labor and discounts. The senior service adviser jumped in and said that you must also replace the stator which changed the estimate to about $3500. I asked to speak to the mechanic that did the work and told me I definitly need both replaced rotor and stator.

Not having the money I paid the $190. for the analysis and told them I would have to think about the money for a week or so and took the MH back. I was the $190. charge is good for 30 days.

The next day I called few places to see if there was after market parts and there was none. I then called another Cummins dealer to get the part numbers on the rotor and stator and asked how much it would cost to install, thinking it may be less of an expense. I was told that they only sold parts and was good enough to give 2 names of mechanics that left cards with him that work on generators. The first guy was mobile and far away and was cheap as he wanted travel charges and was not any different than Cummins.

The second guy’s shop was not too far from me and said he would give me 10% discount on the parts as he had an account with Cummins and would also do an analysis. It wound up it was not the circuit board, the brushes, rotor or the stator. It was a voltage regulator, it was replaced at the cost of $650. Cummins said they would give me my $190 back but I want more. I can stop my AMEX charge. They tried to rip me off.

What would you do???

The thing that got goat my was they were so indiferant and blasé about the situation. Fortuantely i was able to resolve the situation in a reasobale way, but I do love people that will think i's ok for them to make a mistake at someone elses cost. This is why the country is in the present situation. I could of gotten suckered, and almost did. The reason I mention special need son was shown why I really needed the genorator

The problem is that you were NOT ripped off. At this point in time who is to say that once the Cummins mechanic actually got in to the repair that he would have noticed exactly what was bad, repaired it, and only charged you $650 or so. No, it's not right to rip someone off, but they did not do that. They gave you an estimate that may or may not have been an accurate depiction of the work that would have actually been done to repair your generator.
Electrical problems are difficult to diagnose and when giving an estimate is it better to say/guess at $650 and then come back and ask for $3500 or to quote $3500 and come back and say it only cost $650?
Again, take the $190 and let it go. You have no way of knowing what the final outcome/price would have been if Cummins did the work.
  • My advise, take the $190 and never go back. And stop thinking about suing every one that you think might have tried to rip you off. It only costs the rest of us more when they raise their labor rates to keep a lawyer on retainer.

  • Done is done.

What you need is a recommendation for a good generator mechanic.
  • What more do you want? The mechanics taken out back and whipped? Cummins said they would give you your money back. That would restore you to before you met them.

If you truly believe they tried to rip you off, rather than just being incompetent, you should file a complaint with the governing authority.

As a caretaker of a special needs person, I would advise you NOT to play that card. It has no real bearing on the issue other than make you look bad. Just state that for undisclosed reasons, you want/need a dependable, operating generator, although some could say "Go to a RV park and use their electric."

Take a deep breath and good luck in your quest.
