Need DP custom exhaust (muffler) shop "up east"

We have a 40-foot DP with a custom 90-degree side exhaust (the original was straight). We need to replace the pipes from the muffler back and are looking for a place that can do this.

We need a place that is comfortable working with 5" truck pipe and, since we're fulltimers, understands working with motorhomes with occupants in them.

We're currently in Pittsburgh, heading generally for New England, with a very flexible path. Pennsylvania, New York, NH, VT, ME, even the DC area. Or Cleveland?

I'd love to hear any experiences that would help us find a place to get this done.

Thanks for the suggestions. We ended up having it done locally but learned a couple of things in the process.

The first guy we talked to said we'd have to bring in the motorhome and leave it there because they'd have to dismantle the exhaust first thing, and it wouldn't be drivable until after the parts came in and were installed. We asked about staying in the RV (we're fulltimers), and he said that wouldn't be possible, but said there's a Holiday Inn Express nearby.

That's what sent us looking for a fulltimer-friendly place to have the work done.

But we decided to go over there in person anyway, to check things out, and talked to the guy who actually does the work and he said we could bring in the moho and he could take all the measurements to get the parts ordered, and then we could come back to get the work done. That was a little better, even though RV parks in the Pittsburgh area are few and far between.

But we decided to do it (bird in the hand and all), and took it in on Monday morning. It turned out that he had enough parts on hand to do the job, except for a chrome exhaust tip, but he made it so that can be bolted on, so we can easily get that done later.

He said he was pretty sure he'd get it done that day, and if that didn't work he could probably "work something out" about staying in the motorhome that night. But it was unnecessary because it took only a few hours.

We've been only about 100 miles since then, but so far it's held together.

I'm annoyed that the original guy we talked to wasn't more accurate about what they could do. They would have lost us as customers if we hadn't taken the initiative to go over in person. And generally, I'm okay with not giving my business to places that don't seem to want it, but this time we were kind of desperate. :)

  • Albany NY also has some heavy duty truck repair facilities, Freightliner for one and I think Peterbuilt. Ive seen MH's at the Freightliner shop.
  • We had similar issue while traveling in Ca., called local freightliner dealer and they were booked, so they referred us to a local "speed shop". They fabricated the exhaust pipe for us and were terribly reasonable in their price... If you were in Ca. and in need of any fabrication, I would not hesitate to contact TEC Repair Services in Bakersfield,Ca. I might suggest you contact your chassis manufacturer for a recommendation in your area.
  • Just a thought - In Albany, NY there is a NAPA Heavy Duty Parts store... they carry 5" pipe & probably could give you the names of shops that work on truck exhaust... 518-783-6272
