Need Help w/ Winterizing - water pump not working

I've been through the steps to winterize, but my pump isn't working right and won't pump the pink stuff to the sink, tub our toilet. Here's what I've done:
Drained and plugged off the hot water heater
Ran faucets until they were dry
Poured pink stuff into water tank - there's plenty in there
Turned on the faucets - nothing happens.
The pump is making some noise, but not near as loud as it usually is.

Do you think I got air in the lines when I ran the faucets dry? If so, how do I fix that?

  • Mike,
Which IS the pressure side of the pump? I've never done anything but turn the pump on at the switch. What am I loosening????
  • Loosen slightly the pressure side line on the pump. Run just a few seconds till it gets primed and puts out a little pink stuff then retighten.Look your plumbing over and go to the closest output weather it's the bathroom shower or kitchen sink and open fully the cold water line . Make positively sure every other line is closed . Run the pump till you get pink stuff then close and go to the next closest, repeat till all are done then repeat with the hot. Next year drain the tank manually and not with the pump and you'll not get air locked .
    Good Luck, Mike
  • Sorry, I can't help troubleshoot the pump but here is my procedure.
    Drain water heater and bypass.
    Drain Fresh water tank.
I have a tee in my water line with 2 cutoffs so I can cut off the line from the water tank and draw pink stuff from a short hose that stays connected.
I then stick that short hose into the 1 gal pink and pump into the Hot, cold and toilet. I let enough pink pump out to fill the P traps and then finally run it through my outside shower/fish cleaning station. I put some in the two holding tanks also after the are emptied. Usually 2 gallons will do the trick.

I have to EDIT to remind everyone with a macerator pump to make sure it has some pink in it also.
  • I did by-pass the water heater.
I've already put 4 gallons of the pink stuff in the water tank - I can see it's at least a few inches above the output, so why would I put water in it?
  • You may have an air block. It happened to me once. Fill water tank about 1/3
full of water and get the pump running again. Then drain the water tank of the water. Add 2 to 3 gallons of pink stuff to water tank and start running the faucets till you see good pink coming out. Don't run the water out of the lines.
    The pink will do that.
And yes, you can get a bit of pink taste from your system doing this...but
if you flush it about 3 times, it ain't bad.

  • This is one of the big problems with the pink stuff. Do not put it in the water tank. A friend took his Prevost into a dealer and the dealer did it that way. His water still tastes like pink stuff. YUK!!!!! That is why blowing out lines is much better method.
  • If you put pink stuff in your fresh water tank, you might not have enough to pump yet. There's always some on the bottom that never drains.

Also, if you did not by-pass the water heater, it's filling up with pink stuff and will not start pumping to the faucets until it's full (6 gallons).

What probably happened, if you did not bypass the water heater, you've already pumped out evrything in the fresh water tank and the water heater is not full yet. So the pump is pumping air now.
