Need some common sense.

We have a class C and planning a half year on the road trip from Washington to Florida and back and DH wants to trade in our Class C for a small B or van because 1) he thinks we will get better gas mileage,(we get about 8 MPG) 2) we could camp and visit any National Park or sight anywhere as size (ours is a 30footer) wouldn't be an issue. Do B's actually get that better gas mileage?

  • navegator's advice is spot on. A "B" can be cramped, and the bathroom isn't that big. Plus, "B"s are not cheap. Except for the Winnebago Travato, expect to pay near six digits for one... and even though a "B" has great MPG, the price difference can buy a lot of fuel.

If you downsize, you might look at a smaller "C", so you have the ability to get into smaller spaces. The Trend is an option, as well as the Phoenix Cruiser 2100, and Nexus RV's 24 footer is also viable.

I am sure you know this, but be wary of the MPG trap. Yes, a chassis might have twice the MPG, but the cost difference in upgrades will pay for a lot of fuel. The key is if you like the new motorhome for getting around in better and like being able be inside it for a rainy day or two.

We travell at 55 miles per hour on a "C" and we normally get between 9 to 10 miles per gallon on a FORD V-10 24 foot C, maybe in a "B" you might get better milage but you will not have the same room and or the same batheroom space or the galley space or storage.

Before you purchase anything go and take a look at them and see if it really is worth changing the RV, pretend to use the toilet, the sower, the galley, siting on the chairs to have a meal (when the weather is bad), etc.

Do not let your emotions take over the "NEW" and really see the reallity of the actual space, some units are Diesel powered and today I see the price being higher for Diesel than for regular gas.

X2 We get the exact same numbers in our 24' V-10. Your 30' C should fit just about anywhere and you will lose $$$ big time trading down to a B. The loss of living space and storage will quickly become an issue especially when you think about what it cost you financially. IMHO: The best RV is the one you own.

  • After having a Roadtrek 210P for almost eight years, we went to a Phoenix Cruiser 2350 (about 24') last fall. We do miss the "drive anywhere" of the B but we feel like we are in a mansion space wise with the PC. Bs are great for touring or spending a few weeks living in but for much longer they get a little confined. Two people, no more, only works well in a B and they better really like each other. We have had three Bs and three Cs over a thirty year period and so we change back and forth every so many years as our type of travel changes.

  • The minimal improvement in gas mileage won't come anywhere close to paying for itself. I also think that a B will get awfully cramped traveling across the country and back.
Personally, I'd much rather use your spacious 31' C.
  • We just purchased a new Solera 24R and yes the Sprinter gets 15mpg. I did not purchase this for fuel saving as I can never live long enough and travel far enought to see any cost saving. I wanted a smaller and easily manuverable unit and this fits our needs. Not easy going from 30 foot fiver and not missing the storage space. We will manage as I believe we always took more than needed as we had the space. I was needing to replace my truck and wanted a new RV so we made this change but would not change for fuel savings only.
