You would be surprised what you can learn from an oil analysis.. When I worked on fleet buses years ago we would send an oil sample to Pennzoil every so often and it would tell you if there was bearing metal in the oil, or antifreeze contamination to let you know there probably is a head gasket starting to leak.. They are good to do on a yearly basis to let you know the health of the engine.. Also mileage is not a good indicator of oil change intervals... If you make short trips you can change every 3 thousand or so. but if you are driving across country you can extend the interval.. On our fleet coaches (Prevosts) we changed oil at 15,000 miles.. They spent a lot of time on the road..
