New converter

I am looking to replace my old converter, a Magnatek 950-2, to a new one with the 4 stage battery charger. I have removed the old one and also removed a separately housed large capacitor ( about 2x4 in.) also wired into the system. Wondering what the capacitor is there for and will I need it for the new converter?

Thank you two for the reply. The Progressive Dynamics unit looks like one of the best to use.

Was the second one for the same MH? If so how long did the first one last?

Hi Doug, it was mounted in the same compartment next to the converter. It was also wired with heavy gauge cables to the same mounted pos. and neg. posts along with the cables from the converter and the cables going off to the batteries. It is round, about 4in long and 2in. across with two terminals. I could send a picture if I knew how to add it to this post.

    That describes a capacitor. Doug

  • You state separately housed "Capacitor". Are you positive it is NOT the 30 amp transfer relay for Genset and Shore Power? I do not ever remember any Converter having a Capacitor housed in separate housing/box. Is this housing mounted directly behind the upper body of the Magnetek? Doug
  • If going with PD I'd look at the unit that output 14.6 volts.

Other brands to consider are Iota, Power Max, and Boondocker. I don't know much about those three.

  • The capacitor is part of a filter to to away with electrical noise. Otherwise you would get a lot of hum through the radio and TV. It also helps to clean up the power charging the battery.
    You will not need it.

The capicator is because the Magnetek converters had to have a battery so if there was no battery you instralled a "Battery Simulator" and that is what Magnetek called the Capicator.. THey do have their uses.

Replcaing the converter.. Two suggestions depending on conditions.
IF this is a "Strand alone" not part of your power distribution system then Progressive DYnamics either a 9200 optionally with the dongle Or a 9100 series WITH teh Charge wizard option (What I have)
The "Dongle" gives you a visual status indicator and the ability to manually force a different mode... If you do not know how to take advantage of that (I have had to on occasion) then the 9200 without dongle (Can be added later)
If you do know how to take advantage of it. then either the 9180 with wizard or the 9100 with dongle.

IF the converter is part of the power distro panel The 4600 again dongle optional.
