new motorhome problems

I just got back from red bay where I had some work done on my 2004 phaeton. I met some people with new motorhomes that had some real horror stories about problems they were having. Many had been there weeks and one had been there over a month. I know that only people with problems are going to be there for work but I wonder just what percentage of people are having serious trouble with their new tiffins.

  • All I've heard about for years on this site is how wonderful Tiffin is at making things right with the folks that buy their product and have problems.

Its great to know that some manufactures do this however I for one (since I live on the west coast) would not be happy if I had to return the unit to Red Bay to be repaired. I'm sure their dealer network must be able to do repairs be they major or minor.
  • A lot of problems with repairs are the time it takes manufacture to ship replacement parts out to the repair shops along with shop receiving damage replacement parts. Parts manufactures have priority system where items go to the production lines first, warranty second and repairs shops last. Special order items can take weeks especially if it's a panel or door has to be made up.
I still think manufacture quality control is very poor to say the least with an attitude that they don't care just ship it to the dealers and let them fix it!! I would like to see it were the dealers do a pre-delivery inspection and if the rigs has obvious defects it's return to the manufacture at there cost!! I have seen a lot of rigs dealers have that have so many manufacture defects you have to wonder why they are trying to sell them and then again the manufacture will not pay warranty work until after the sale!!
  • Tiffin has had more than their share of problems with design and build quality and from what I have read elsewhere, their Red Bay facility is bursting at the seams with repairs to their products. Do other motorhomes have issues also? Yes, most do, but for the most part the issues are minor.

It is interesting when this discussion arises that the vast majority of posters are people who have units that are more than five years old. The one poster who has a new unit with an issue sounds more like an issue with the dealer than the manufacturer. I don't think I would paint all manufacturers with the same broad brush of poor quality when it tends to be more of an issue with certain manufacturers rather than the industry.

If you have ever bought or built a new home, you know that there are many issues that arise and the "punch list" is common on all construction projects and RV's are no different. There will be some issues and most of them will be very minor in nature.
  • I've often said, we need the Japanese to build some RV's and put the American companies on their toes.

Long waits for repairs not just motorhomes. My 2013 NEW Forest River was in the shop under warranty repairs. from 16 July to the 10th of October. None of their products for me again. All the time was for a new front cap. Still looks the same after replacement. Lousy workmanship if you ask me.

Fault of the dealer or the manufacturer?
  • I certainly count my lucky stars that we have not needed any major repairs in the 6.5 yrs. we've owned our coach. Certainly a repair or two beyond regular maintenance but we have never been stranded or any trip ruined due to any failure.

Our coach seems to be running so well right now I'm a little afraid of moving to a new coach which we are seriously thinking about doing. I think our coach is in it's prime for a used coach and still has decent value (new enough for a new buyer to get a loan if needed).

I feel sorry for people who have major issues with new coaches, especially serious issues requiring long down times. These things are not cheap and you would think that they would be made better with fewer issues.

  • you ask why? that,s easy poor workmanship and the company doesn,t care, the motto is push them out as fast as you can. if you want quality BUY A leisure travel van.
  • Why are so many RV repair shops full?
Why does it take so long to get an appointment?
Why does it take so long to get repairs accomplished?

    It ain't just Tiffins.
  • Look, they can build NEW site built homes in 2 months.

There is no reason that repairs should take this long. Ridiculous.
