Marshall,
I cannot recommend any rig with a carburetor because todays fuels with such high levels of ethanol are simply too hard on them. If you get the engine running right, it won't last. Adding that carburetors are much worse in fuel efficiency and performance. They are finicky at high mountain altitudes, and they provide less power given the same engine equipped with fuel injection. They are bad in every category.
The only person who is fine with a carb is a person with a passion for them. Our last rig, we sold in 2007. It had a carburetor and I was so glad to say farewell to it. It had me fussing with it every-other year. It got to be too much to be practical to own any longer.
Since you seem to have a lot of time to shop, maybe a year's worth of time, continue with your education on what that "RIGHT" rig is. Then have your cash ready, look for that right rig at your price, and when you find it, don't ask us if you should buy it. Just buy it because you'll be confident that it is that right rig.
In general this is a "RIGHT" list if I were shopping.
- no carburetor, ABSOLUTELY no carburetor, I would not even consider throttle-body fuel injection. I would insist on multi-port fuel injection (1 injector per cylinder)
- no water damage
- runs and drives good
- preferably stored in a barn or other enclosure most of it's life
- one that fits my earlier construction outline
- one that will accommodate all my family members
- watch out for uncontrolled chassis frame rust. Hit the frame hard with a hammer. If it showered down rust flakes, I'd be done with that rig.
- don't look for perfection, be prepared for "Fixable" things that are not part of the foundation of the rig. The condition of the chassis and house are primary. Condition of things like the generator or a/c unit, needs brakes or tires, all are things I would consider "Fixable". Given your tight spending limit, put aside extra funds for such. When considering such an old low priced rig, you could easily spend more on the "Fixables" than the rig, especially if you are not mechanically handy.
