As a general rule, and I really do mean "general". I believe there is an emission sticker under the hood may also help to identify. If the air filter housing sits directly over the engine, circular or oval shape, the engine has either a carburetor or throttle-body injection (TBI).
Multi-port fuel injection (MFI) systems typically have the throttle body placed away from the top of the engine, oriented horizontally, which places the air filter housing further away yet, off the engine.
I suggest you google the various systems to familiarize yourself, but here is a quick education.
Here is an old 1983 Ford chassis carbureted or TBI engine, a common motor home chassis. Carbureted or TBI, they will look the same. Note the black round metal thing on top of the engine. That thing holds the air filter.

Here is a 1992 MFI Ford E-Series engine. Where is the engine, right? It's much easier to get to just by removing a few simple things. That plastic box in the front is the air filter housing.
