The 454 in my '84 does just fine. It looks like the vapor lock avoidance advice that GM provided back in the 80s was implemented on mine. There was evidently an electric pusher pump back at the tank that has since been removed but it works fine. Hasn't vapor locked, even running for 30 miles with temp gauge pegged in the red (plugged radiator).
You're lucky with the tires. Mine has the 19.5" rims which really limit my options.
Enjoy it and the time with your family. I got mine after I divorced as well. Not that my ex-wife prohibited it, but I guess I never thought of it. My new (sort of - it's been 7 years) mate loves to travel in it with me and my kids. It's nice just to leave it all behind once in awhile - even if it's just for the weekend.
