Newbie Question about RV Insurance

This is a question from a first time RV buyer. I am in the process of purchasing a late 90's Class C RV. It appears to be in really nice shape. It just needs a good cleaning from top to bottom (dust, surface dirt, a little wear in the rug).

The dealer I am buying from stated that insurance for RV's of this type should be about $300 - 400 a year.

When I went to my insurance agent, she quoted me $480... for six months. When I gasped, she said "Yeah, I thought it would be higher". I told her I thought it would be lower. Insurance on my mid-2000's Honda SUV is about the same price for six months.

Considering I live in the Northeast, having a pretty good driving record, is $960 a year for RV insurance the standard?

Look at the policy details. Are you trying to insure something for which you might carry the risk yourself? Small deductibles? Do you have mileage estimates right?

Comprehensive risks tend to mean high premiums on that coverage for vehicles that spend a lot of time in storage.

Claims history means a lot more than driving record.

Changing the deductible from $250 to $500 only dropped it to $468. I have the paperwork from the insurance agent with all the details.

I do not believe I have ever filed a claim with my insurance agent before.
  • Get more quotes. I had huge swings from one company to another, even the RV specialty companies. I'm not saying that 960 a year is bad as that might depend on what you are insuring. Some companies charged more cause it was my first RV. I understood that but when other company didn't ask that question it was much cheaper.
  • Get quotes from other companies. My insurance company doesn't specialize in RV's, so they quoted me $700 every 6 months. I found it for less than half that through another company.

  • Never trust a dealer! ;) I hope you've done your research concerning the Class C you're interested in and really go over it carefully. Have you had an RV before?

We paid about $100/mo for our 2011 Class A gasser when we had it. We pay about $140/mo for our '11 DP now & both were higher than what we expected.
