My former Sierra truck got 20 mpg normally and 12 mpg when pulling a 3000 lbs TT or a 6000 lbs TT. It appeared to me that wind resistance was the largest factor affecting mileage - at least on relatively flat terrain.
The idea that gassers are getting heavier is certainly true. We routinely meet people with older 26000 lbs CVWR MHs that weigh 15000 lbs fully loaded and have 11000 lbs towing capacity. Our MH has the same 26000 lbs CVWR but is 22000 lbs fully loaded with only 4000 lbs towing capacity.
