newmar leveler leaking fluid

2003 gas mountain aire. have a passenger front leveler cylinder leaking. found puddle on pad this weekend. cant find any info on manual I have from newmar about the cylinder and info on it. I bought it uses so I may be missing some manuals. 38 foot, gas with 8.1 cyl. engine. where can I get into on where resourvoir for fluid is, what fluid to put in and info on the cylinder. Going to crawl under it in next few days to check it and see if I can see where leak is. pretty hard to see the thing from what I have seen so far. Any help is appreciated. It is going up and down but I have had a couple of incidents where alarm went off going down road as if it might be leaking down enough to set off alarm.

Thanks for help.
  • 1. You have HWH jacks
    2. Dextron 3 is the fluid to use
    3. IF you see fluid coming out at the bottom where the silver piston extends and retracts you will need that jack rebuilt/replaced.
    4. DO NOT use any type stop leak.
    5. You will see the pump and the solenoids. There will be a TANK connected to that solenoid assbly. There will be a filler cap on top that tank. Make sure the Jacks are fully retracted before adding fluid. You will fill to within 1/2 to 1 inch from the top of the tank. To find the pump, have someone activate the jacks, You will hear the pump easily. follow the noise until you find it. Usually, on your model the pump is up front by the Radiator for the engine, but some Gas Newmar's installed in a side compartment(very few).
    6. The AP number on the jack is on the outside cylinder on the jacks. The fronts will be the same and the Rear's will be a different jack, but the same. They used to install masking tape over the Silver/Black AP sticker to prevent scratching and undercoating from making it hard to read. You peel the maskin tape off to get the AP number. AP number is the model number of that jack. Doug
  • If they turn out to be Power Gear levelers look for a zerk fitting on the collar of the leg and give it a little grease . May stop the leaking.Only top off the fluid level when all the jacks are in the stored position.
  • Yeah many manuals won't go into great detail on the levelers - especially the inner details. The good news though is you will find many mechanics who are naturally gifted in mechanics who will work on them. This certainly is not an impossible problem. Most likely if it is a fluid leak it is either a seal or (hopefully not) a crack in the housing.
  • Awesome, thanks so much for advice. we have 2003 mountain aire 38 ft. so it may be same unit. cant find a thing in manuals about them.
  • Can't say for sure on your coach but ours has the HWH 325 system. The control unit should be in the front of the coach once you open the hood. Just to the right side of center. I've always dealt with RV Leveling in Indiana. Chuck is the owner and is a HWH service center. He's much easier to deal with then the factory itself. His phone number is (800)826-6267. He has plenty of inventory, plenty of information and is great to work with. Give him a try. You could also try to google HWH 325 and see what information you can gather from the net. Good Luck
