Newport Oregon to Fort Collins Co

We are new to the RV life and need some help. We will be traveling from Newport Oregon to Fort Collins Colorado this month and noticed there are a few ways to go. Is it better to go up to Portland and go that way or down to Sacramento and go that way? I heard going through Mt.Hood can be crazy and going through Nevada is really windy. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Christy
  • BTW - gas is usually a little cheaper once you get to about Nampa. And 85 octane works just fine in the V10 as long as you don't drop elevation during that tank of fuel. If I know I'll be dropping out of the mountain on the way home, then I fill with 88 (there is no 87 in most mountain states).

Due east across Oregon to Ontario pick up I84

This is my preferred route too. Hwy 20 across eastern Oregon is quite a bit quicker than 26, although 26 has some nice sights.

IF you don't hit Portland traffic, the driving time is the same even though Hwy 20 saves ~80 miles. If you don't like Tombstone pass, take 22 from Salem to Santiam Pass. Much gentler climb and only adds a little more distance, and no extra time if Tombstone would slow you down.

Thanks very helpful... I would like the way to go thru Bend without going thru the town amandasgramma thanks

I drove that route last January, Bend, Boise, and then for weather reasons south to 70, then across. The drive across Oregon was beautiful.

  • At least you will have a TAIL wind across Nevada and Wyoming!
  • I'll tell you the route we'd take if we were going thru Oregon this month.
    Newport to Lincoln City
Lincoln City to Salem (hwy 20)
    Salem to Bend (Hwy 20)
Bend to Ontario and then catch 84

The further north the passes thru the Cascades the more snow ...USUALLY

Best, to figure a further south route just in case)

From Salem, I5 South to Eugene, catch Hwy 58 and go east. Take the Crscent Cutoff road (knocks off 20 miles) and hit Hwy 97.....go north to Bend, then east on 20 to Ontario (If you choose this route, let me know by PM and I'll give you the way to get around Bend without going thru the town -- only works when coming from the south).

SO.....that being said....ALWAYS ALWAY when going from the west side of Oregon to the east side this time of year......check the TripCheck for road conditions. We were surprised yesterday....wearing tshirts on Monday outside....then 5-6" snow the next morning......so even check the morning you leave the coast!!!!
