No Sta-bil for generator?

On the advice of RV.net experts, I use Sta-bil diesel in my motorhome. Because I also do not use my boat often, I use Sta-bil for gas engines in a four-cylinder inboard.

Soooooo, I just installed a 30 KW Kohler diesel generator for backup power at the office. The tank is 78 gallons of diesel. We plan to test 20 minutes per week, and the tank is projected to last one year.

The generator installer says he has never heard about Sta-bil for diesel engines and opposes using it.

What do you think? Would you use diesel Sta-bil in a 30 KW backup generator?

Moderator, I know this is not an RV question, so thanks very much for your understanding.
  • I don't have a diesel but I used STA-BIL (made in Arizona) last winter in my gasser at Lake Havasu City, AZ. when my coach sat for 7 months while we were RVing there. Couldn't find regular type so I used the Marine STA-BIL formula and it worked just fine. The only thing I didn't like about STA-BIL was there office in Phoenix would not give me a product rebate because, I had a P.O. Box for a address.
  • Diesel fuel, jet fuel, kerosene, etc. does not "rot" and turn to varnish like gasoline does.
As long as the fuel is dry (NO water in the tank), no additives are needed, and no algae will grow.
If there IS water in the tank, the tank should be cleaned and dried to remove ALL traces of moisture.
I recommend that, before using ANY additive, look up the MSDS of the additive, then think about whether you want that chemical cocktail in your fuel tank!
  • Sta-Bil diesel fuel stabilizer is a fairly new guy on the market, being released January of 2010. And most mechanics will tell customers to steer clear of additives, especially when the diesel engine builders say additives are not recommended.

As to diesel fuel needing stabilized, I have seen over 5 year old diesel fuel being sold by a fuel distributor. It was just fine! It was pumped out of old railroad tanks and mixed in the distributors 50,000 fuel tank back after the fuel shortage of the mid 1970s. Spent 6 years in those railroad tanks. No complaints from anyone about it not running good. Now this new ULSD, you will have to watch to insure that there is not moisture in the bottom of the storage tanks. If your fuel is dry, you will be okay.

If he has never heard of it, he is hardly qualified to make a judgement on its use. The fact he would pass judgement on something he knows nothing about, says something about his qualifications.
  • Power Service...grey or white bottle depending on time of year...
  • I can't imagine any mechanic that hasn't heard of Sta-Bil. He must not have much experience with engines in general.
  • I use Diesel 9.1.1. in mine. Will displace any water in the fuel, within reason of course...WalMart @ about $10/quart. Use it every fourth fill up..Made in USA....Dennis
