Norcold N842IM question

Thanks for the responses and education. Yes, eventually the norcold starting flashing ‘low dc’ on the screen. 2 new house batteries later all seems to be good. 12v house battery maintenance lesson the hard way. They were toasted.

I”ve read some recommending dumping these types of fridges and going with all ac models. Any thoughts?

The 842 is a standard RV LP and 120 refer. The IM means Icemaker. ALL RV absorbsion refers require 12 volt DC to operate the CONTROLS. The controls then activate either the 120 Heat element or the LP Flame. If you Power Converter failed, the refer would still operate on either 120 or LP until the DC voltage from the Battery dropped below 10.5 volts. There is no requirement to have a Converter to operate a refer, just a system that keeps the Coach 12 volt DC system at 12.9 volts or above. Doug

Not sure about this specific model, but most RV type refrigerators need 12 volts dc to run the controls. Many also have 2 fuses on the control board out back-- 1 for 12 volts dc control and 1 for 120 volts dc for the heating element. The 12 volts dc would have to be supplied either from the converter or batteries. Good luck-- Mick
