Norcold refrigerator does too warm

I have a Norcold 1200LRIM refrigerator in a 2003 Newmar Kountry Star Class A with two problems. The first is that it will only cool to mid 40 degree temps. The second is that it won't run on AC, only propane. There is 120V where it plugs in on the panel outside. I'm assuming there is a problem in the fridge control panel. I'm thinking of just taking it in to Camping World and having them work on it. Does any one have any other suggestions? Is there anything I can do myself? Should I consider replacing the entire refrigerator (requires windshield removal) or try replacing the cooling unit? We don't full time but use it about five months a year. We seldom boon dock and mostly are connected to shore power.

  • Thanks to everyone. I'll take it in and have it checked. But now I can go in with some information.

X2 on Doug's suggestions. You should be able to hear the fans running at the outside vent when it's hot outside. If no sound try putting a box fan blowing in the outside vent hole.

By using a platform as high as the bottom of it, I'm able to get my 1200 out by myself... Granted I've only had it out a half dozen time and next week for the LAST time. I've removed the driver's side window to remove it and put a home refer in.
  • You are jumping the gun big time. 2003. That probably means the REAR cooling fans are not running as after 12 years the fans and the Fan tstat is probably bad. If so, $400 bill, because the refer has to be pulled to replace the fans and even do a diag on the fans. The 120 side, is probably bad heat element/s and the 120 fuse maybe blown. BUT, the 1200 has a diag code that will tell you that. So, get it into a good Service Center and get a diag before worrying about replacement. A NEW 1200 will be in the $3000 to $3500 then add the labor and the windshield removal. BETTER to replace the cooling unit IF IT NEEDS to be done. From the mid 40's you stated, the odds are the cooling fans are the problem with correct cooling on LP. Doug
  • theres a shop in indiana that has good reviews on repairing frigs , but I don,t no there name. some one will tell us.
  • Sorry to hear of your problems.
I have had problem with our Norcold for a couple of years now. Have spent a lot of money to repairmen who said they could fix it. Ours stays close to 40 when the inside of the coach is above 70 degrees. The freezer compartment stays below 32 all the time (Electric or Propane)At night as the weather cools down, both compartments work great. Had fans replaced, new seals placed on doors.
So far nothing helps. Sure would be interested on if you get yours fixed just what repair did it.
  • You would be much better off getting an independent shop to look at it.
