O.K. ... Here's a bona-fide 'stupid' question...

The reality of reality shows - There is/was a how called "Container Wars". The premise of the show was that people could bid on shipping containers, hoping to cash in on treasures that may or may not be enclosed in said containers.They had one show in particular where the winning bidder started unloading his container and way in the back he found a Ural sidecar motorcycle. So, they had an "Expert" come in and assess the motorcycle to try and set a price - that way the winning bidder can know if he made any money or not.

The funny thing is: out here in the SF Bay Area we have a large community of Ural owners, and the bike in question was actually owned by one of our members, and it was that owner who was supposedly the "expert" who knew everything about the bike. The production company had come to him to rent his bike for the show, and offer him the opportunity to be in front of the camera as an expert! We all had a great laugh about it when it aired!

It is my opinion that ALL reality shows are somewhat real and somewhat scripted. They may not have an actual written script but the editors make stories with what they have. There are other reality shows that make it real obvious there is a script such as Pawn Stars. They seems to always have some plot above and beyond the pawn shop.

It would probably be kind of boring if we had to watch the whole process. A great example of that are fishing shows where for an hour you watch these expert anglers catching fish as soon as their lure hits the water! Of course, what we don't see are the hours and hours of time spent filming a whole lot of nothing!

With all that said, I do have some reality show guilty pleasures such as Gold Rush, Pawn Stars, Bering Sea Gold, etc...

They are no more actors than the Deadliest Catch crab crew, Ice Road Truckers, and an endless supply of reality shows. Can/ Do some of them 'ham' it up? yep... But that doesn't mean the families aren't there looking for an RV. There's nothing wrong with a producer asking them questions to get related comments or simply how to ask a question that you can at least build a scene that the viewer wont fall asleep over.

So instead of paid actors, they use unpaid wannabees. Emphasis on the word "use." :D

There is probably some token compensation for playing along.

Some are probably real customers who get a "discount" in exchange for being on the show but I'm betting a lot are just pretending. When you see a very attractive 25yr old couple with a kid and they are buying $500k rigs, you know it's fake.
