oil? 1985 Fleetwood Ralley

I'm a new owner to an old MH. I would like to know what type and weight oil would be best for her. I've got a 1985 Fleetwood Ralley for those that may have missed the subject heading. Thanks

  • Read the owners manual and use whatever it calls for. My 2008 E-450 calls for 5W20.
  • In that era, the grade was 10W30 for most Ford engines. Almost any gasoline engine motor oil you buy today will be superior to the original specification.

When we had an '83 E350 we used 10W-30. Good oil for year-round use.
  • whew.. I love my home on wheels.. and would really hate something happening to it because I made a mistake! Thanks. I filled in my profile so people can see the MH. well the pic link isn't working, but if you click on my FB page, it's my banner pic too
  • yes, After a blow out, grin. The guy I got it from said it had good tires. The tread was GREAT. I took it to Les Schawb for a tire inspection and to make sure the tires had the proper air pressure. They, too, said they looked great. 400 miles later, doing 55 on a highway I had a front tire blow out. Not nearly as scary as I had imagined. Just a big bang and the following thump thump of a flat. Turns out all 6 of the tires had severe dry rot and were 11 years old.

On the oil,, eeek. I called an auto parts store and was told
5-30 oil.. so I put 1 quart in ( that's all it was low after 6 k miles) .. if it's not the right weight.. have I potentially damaged something? I've not yet driven it since adding the oil. I'm supposed to go to see a friend at a horse show 80 miles away and will cancel if I need to.

I did look on the dip stick but wasn't able to find the oil weight.
  • Welcome to the forum and congrats on your Fleetwood.

Check, or have checked, the age of the tires. RV tires usually age out before they wear out.

And, ask lots of questions, there is a lot of information available on the forum.

    Enjoy your travels.
  • That means it's a Ford engine and chassis, probably the 351. Which usually means 10W30. If I recall correctly it's marked on the dip-stick
  • Oh I love having senior moments. It's a 1986 Jambo on the registration.. The DEQ report says e-350 Cutaway.. Thats all I know
