Oil and filter change

How many of you do oil/filter change yourself on your RV.I have done it on my car but not RV.Is it difficult.Mine is coachman Freelander 32BH.It has Ford engine i believe 450 super duty.

That depends entirely on how strong your hands are. Like other posts said, tighten 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn after the gasket contacts the mating surface. For me, I need a wrench to loosen but can tighten by hand. Some might have extreme kung-fu grip and be able to loosen without a wrench and others might need a wrench to get the filter tight enough.

I never found the need to tighten with a wrench afterwards. I do it by hand and haven't had a leaker . personal preference I guess. Next time I change the oil it seems like the filter tightened itself anyway. I know this, spend the dough to get the proper filter wrench for your vehicle and some nice drip pans to keep the driveway clean.Wally world sells kitty litter in a 25 LB bag that absorbs spills nicely.

Turn the filter until the gasket just makes contact with the base and then 3/4 turn more.
You will need a filter wrench.
  • More clearance under the RV than the car - pretty simple job.
  • NAPA has oil wrenches that actually fit the bottom of the filter and you use a 1/2 inch bar, it is better to use and extension to reach the filter tool that way you will not peel your knuckles the tool fits the filter snug they are like a shallow bowl, when installing the filter use a little oil to lubricate the filter's gasket and make sure that the old gasket is off with the filter, once the filter is hand tight turn no more that a 1/4 of a turn to tighten either by hand or better with the tool, do not turn more than 1/2 turn.

  • I do all of my own oil changes except for my DP because it hasn't been home in five years. I have it done at SpeedCo.

Don't forget to change the oil in the generator while you're at it.

  • I do all of my vehicles. I have big wooden blocks I drive up on and while under there bring a flashlight and roll around on my creeper checking things out.

    I do all of ours. That's a car, a van, a pickup, a boat and our Class C which is E450 V10.

You need about 06-07 quarts of oil. I don't get any filter but Motorcraft FL820S.

On most oil changes I simply remove the filter and catch the little bit of oil that escapes. On the V10, it's a mess to do it that way. Reason? The Oil Cooler Adapter sits above the Filter. When the Filter comes off, a LOT of oil from the cooling adapter and lines, maybe cooler itself, wants to drain out. So I loosen the filter just enough to be sure it's going to come the rest of the way off. Then I punch a hole in the bottom of the filter and do something else till all that oil has drained. After that it's a normal oil change.
