Oil change interval, why is there a time limit?

On most engines, there's a mileage or time between oil changes. On my Cummins 8.3, 350hp diesel, it's 15,000 miles or one year, which ever comes first. Well, I'm at one year, but only have 6100...

Those that change every year probably change their cars every 3000 miles. That was debunked 40+ years ago by Consumer Reporter in Checker Cabs. About the same time oil analysis let me go 250 hours instead of the Cat recommendation of 100.
