OIL CHANGE

Probably should have asked for some member reviews, before I bought, but anyway I received one of these today.... OIL DRAIN PAN
along with one of these... FILTER, so it looks like I'll be changing my own oil, as I always have done in the past.
Storing the beast, isn't going to be the problem, I thought it would be and for now, it's under the rig and ready to go.
I kept telling myself, that I would just hire this out, with such a big crankcase to contend with, so called around a month ago and here's an example with calling Camping World. They want over $400 and are booked through Dec. and even at 25 miles, it'll take about 8 gallons of fuel for getting there and back. Then there's the hassle of it all. I've already bought a $20 pneumatic grease gun and did the lube, which was easy enough, so why stop now?
I mean I'd like letting someone else work on my rig once in a while, but they just won't let me or at least to my satisfaction.
Even with the purchase, I'm ahead and way ahead for next time and thereafter. Time wise will be about the same or less, so it's sounding like a no brainer so far, but then I haven't been there and done that, as yet.
Oh yeah, I failed to ask about fuel filter changes and will be doing that along with it. I have them on board already and expect to always have those for spares, regardless.
  • You may want to advertise it on Craigslist. There are many people/businesses that will PAY for your used oil that they can convert it to diesel, or to filter it for reuse as lubricating oil. Doesn't cost anything to see if there are any in your area that will pay for it.
  • Walmart accepts used oil-- at least in every area we have ever been in where they have an auto service center.

Haven't thought much about the tranny as yet.
Ah, I didn't think of that - just offloading back into the containers. Most places that take oil mean you have to carry it back there so I was curious.

  • I know how I get rid of mine.. I burn it in my waste oil furnace. Most auto parts stores will take it for free.
  • How will you get rid of the oil? Thats a nice looking oil catch system!
  • For my big drains like my Semi and the farm tractors, I took an old dented aluminum fuel tank (from a wrecked semi) and plasma cut the end plus about 12" off and cut in hand holds. I'm cheap and it holds 15 gallons no issue but I like the roll around drain pan you bought a lot. Just get under there and do it. Plenty of room.

Get about 40 quarts of Shell 5-40 Rotella T6 Synthetic oil and call it good, or Delo or whatever you want. I have a Cat in my road tractor (3406 E) and I use Rotella 5-40 and have for years.

My sump holds 44 quarts. I suspect yours is less as your motor is smaller than mine.

Don't forget the Allison either. You'll need an Allison Filter and Allison fluid too. Allisons like to have their fluid changed as well.

If I do it myself, I know what I'm putting in and I know it's done right.
