Oil change?

Just to put a pin in this one, I changed the oil to Valvoline 5w30 Synthetic. I had time and didn't mind spending the money, so I did it. Since the filter was just replaced 1500 miles ago, I drained it and re-installed it. The oil was pretty clean.

Ford used a Technical Service Bulletin to change the oil recommendation to 5W20 with a particular Ford specification, for all of the modular engine series, all years, regardless of when it says on the filler cap or in the owner's manual. Using the Ford spec 5W20, the change interval is 5000 miles.

Ford has a semi-synthetic made for them, Ford branded, to meet the spec. It is also one of the least expensive oils that meet or exceed the spec, though many brands do.

I doubt if your oil will get much hotter running across Tennessee than it will any other place you go, engine temperature on that engine series is regulated to run fairly hot, for efficiency.

A 10w-30 will flow like a 10 weight oil when cold and a 30 weight oil when hot. What isn't understood??

Red Cans? Reclaimed oil? Whazzat?

I agree that you should go with whatever the manual says and disregard anyone who tries to overrule (in this forum or anywhere else) what the manufacturer says to do. However, as noted above, the manual for new Ford V10s says to use 5W20. The relevant page from the manual is attached http://www.skiprd.com/OilCapacity.pdf. Yours may be different and definitely go with the manual, but double-check to be sure.

Make sure when you buy oil it is in a red can, the red cans are always the best oil, even if they don't put the grad on the can. Reclaim oil in red 5 gal cans are real good for Fords and Chev to. The name brands don't mean much. Just high pressure sales team and more money for them. You can cut your close buy 60% buy changing oil every 24,000 miles and useing the oil in the big red cans.
