Oil used for an Onan for a 2014 Sunseeker

Just wondering what oil most of you use on the Onan Microquiet. Mine is a 2014.It says any 30 wt. would be ok but would like to be a little more specific. Thanks for all the help

  • Bednarski,

You have a 2014 generator.... most likely it is still under warranty. I'd use the grade of oil recommended by ONAN in your owner's manual FOR THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE RANGE YOU EXPECT before the next oil change. There's a chart in the manual that will get you on the right track. FWIW, a 30W is good between 32F and ?, the manual does not give an upper limit. 15W40 will go from about 15F to 100F, and above. You can not go wrong using Onan's product, ONAMAX. A last point, it is important to change the oil at 20 hours. The next O/C is at 150. Again, it's in your manual.

Oil, diesel, or LP gensets should be using the same oil for the same operating temperature range. But! Check your manual.

Probably every answer given in this thread so far would give great protection if the oil was changed regularly. Maybe we could narrow it down a bit more if you give a good idea how you would use the generator. Example grinding away on 100 degree day running the AC for hours. Or cooking a few minutes on microwave once in a while. Or winter camping battery charging.

I use Mobil 1 0W40 in mine. It will shear to heavy 30 weight, pretty much in spec w/ Onan. Good for all conditions. If I were doing lot of hot weather AC hours I really like the suggestion of the High Mileage 10W40.
  • Ran conventional oil up to about 28 hrs, then switched to Mobil 1 10W-40 High Mileage Synthetic. I run this due to its higher level of ZDDP, the zinc/phosphorus anti-wear compound. The manual for our Onan specifies SL oil, and the Mobil 1 HM is an SL (as well as SN) rated oil. Compared to the conventional 15W-40 the Onan seems to runs smoother, and when shutting it off it doesn't have as dramatic a "chug-chug" as it used to while stopping.
  • I broke mine in on dino and then switched to synthetic. Air cooled engines love synthetic oil.
  • It runs on gas. I think I will possibly just use a 10w x 30 synthetic. I know the book says a 30 weight.
  • Straight 30 weight is the Onan recommendation for temperatures above 32F. They also recommend 15W40 for temperatures between 10F and 100F.

Here in Illinois, we run straight 30 weight in our Onans because that closely approximates the temperature range we run in.
  • Depends on what fuel is used: Diesel, Gasoline, or Propane. Makes a difference. What does your generator run on?
  • Because I use the Microquiet 4000 in both cold and warm seasons, I use a name brand 15W40, diesel spec. Usually Delvac or Rotella, as I am in ExxonMobile and Shell marketing territory, but Delo would be the same if you are in Chevron country.
  • Assuming it is like 10W30, so you have the same winter/summer weights, it doesn't really matter. I prefer full synthetic because the Onan is splash-lubed, so oil does a lot more "work" than in a pressurized oil setup.

Of course, the oil described in the manual is the minimum.
