Onan generators

I was told by a mechanic that an onan rv generator has a life expectancy of 800-900 hours. Can anyone confirm this? My generator has 590.9 hours and needs a control panel for $525., plus install. I am wondering if it is worth it. Any thoughts?

  • Some of my shops service trucks were equipped with Onan Marquis 7000 gas generators with 12-13,000 hours on them without a major overhaul.
  • Do some research. What board do you need?
Alot of new boards on eBay for far less money. Also, check online for vendors that rebuild boards.
  • I've known some Onan RV generators used in a commercial mobile film truck to have run several thousand of hours.
  • A properly maintained Onan will give thousands of hours of service, yours is just nicely broken in. Yes, they are very proud of their parts but it is definitely worth fixing.
  • i put thousands of hours, on generators
Onan is normally very long lived
lack of use aka low hours, kill more Onans than two much use

moisture collects, things corrode and rust, field brushes stick, voltage regulators get voltage spiked from the sticky brushes and corroded connections

what that guy told you "IS WRONG"
  • George,

First, tell us what you have-- gasoline, propane or diesel.

And that sounds WAY low for hours on any of them. But if we know what model you have, others with the same model can chime in on their experiences.
